DIVAS HOLD ACADEMY AWARDS PREMIERE

The Divas of the Balboa Theater know how to throw a party. They will

sponsor “An Academy Awards Premiere” dinner and dance benefit Saturday

featuring the Johnny Crawford Dance Orchestra and a celebrity look-alike

contest where six awards will be presented.

John and Donna Crean will receive lifetime achievement awards and

proceeds will benefit the performing arts through the historic Balboa

Theater.

Event attire is either Hollywood glam or celebrity look-alike.

The guild was formed about a year ago and today has about 130 members.

So far, organizers have raised about $2.5 million for construction on the

theater but are looking for $4 million more, which will also help with

the first-year budget.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on May 22 before 10 months of

construction begins. A 350-seat theater is included in the plans and work

could be completed by fall of 2002.

Sheriff speaks on drug abuse

Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona and Maralys Wills will speak about

the book they wrote together, “Save My Son: A Mother and Sheriff Unite to

Reclaim the Lives of Addicted Offenders” at Borders Books, Music & Cafe.

PLANNING AHEAD

Magician Jeff Martin will present a free magic show to celebrate

National Library Week at the Newport Beach Central Library.

Saxophonist Joshua Redman will make his J.P. Morgan Jazz Club debut in

a show titled “An Evening with the Joshua Redman Quartet” March 30 and 31

at the Orange County Performing Arts Center.
