Sailors split

GARDEN GROVE - Newport Harbor High’s Sailors split a pair of

softball games at the Garden Grove Tournament Saturday, the Tars falling

in the opener of pool play to Loara, 6-1, before posting a 5-4 victory

over Century in action at Lake School.

Lisa Huntington and Amanda Campbell each doubled in the opener, but

that was the extent of the Sailors’ offense.

In the victory over Century, the Sailors struck for five second-inning

runs.

Athena Vasquez was 2 for 3 with a bases-loaded single for two RBIs,

and she came around to score on an outfielder’s miscue. Ashley Miller

also had an RBI.

Shelby Crisp, Amanda Campbell, Sara Gorman and Melissa Vega all

singled for Newport.

Pitcher Kim Moore, now 1-2-2, went the distance in both games.
