Boys Golf: Estancia ready to make its move

COSTA MESA - When naming Pacific Coast League favorites in boys
golf, don’t count out Estancia High, Eagles Coach Art Perry says.
Last year Estancia finished fifth in the PCL finals, just one stroke
behind crosstown rival Costa Mesa. But this season Perry says the Eagles
will be different.
“We’re a lot bigger, stronger and a lot smarter,” Perry said of his
six returners. “We have everybody back. We’ve worked really hard over the
offseason to improve our skills.”
Sophomore Jason Cassity will lead a balanced attack for the Eagles.
Senior Greg Rausch and juniors Aaron Frankel, Joey Mueller, Pete Baker
and Nick Razo strengthen Estancia’s chance to win the PCL title and
remind Eagles fans of the golf glory days.
Perry, now in his 22nd season, still remembers those days when his
Eagles won the CIF titles in 1988-91.
He and his brother, Chuck, have been working to get the program back
to that type of success. Dave Alexander and John Liebengood, who coach
the junior varsity, are also molding the talent at Estancia.
Also, this year, Perry is taking the team to Hawaii during spring
break to compete against the Hawaiian high schools. The Eagles also plan
to play in the Mark Keppel Tournament and the Long Beach Millikan
Tournament, which are in April.
Estancia begins PCL play Monday against Laguna Beach at Aliso Viejo
Golf Club. The Eagles then seek revenge as they take on the Mustangs at
Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club’s Mesa Linda course Tuesday.
