Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

Corona del Mar High sophomore Ryan Achterberg crushes his first

varsity home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Sea Kings

to a 2-1 Sea View League baseball victory over Back Bay rival Newport

Harbor. Southpaws Garrett Nuzum, of the Sailors, and Chad Johnson, of

CdM, combine for 18 innings, 264 pitches and 43 first-pitch strikes

against 69 batters. Nuzum, who is a transfer from CdM, works into the

ninth inning, giving up one run with seven strikeouts and just two walks.

Johnson pitches a career-high 10 innings, throwing a four-hitter,

striking out 11 and walking four.

Estancia’s Chris Felix wins three events and anchors the 400-meter

relay team to victory for the Eagles’ boys track and field team. But that

wasn’t enough as host Huntington Beach wins, 71-53. Felix takes the 100

(11.26), the 200 (23.38) and the long jump (19-6 1/2) before anchoring

the winning relay team (45.9) James Dawkins wins the high jump, clearing

5-8 and is also on the victorious 400 relay team.

In the largest invitational of the season, the Orange Coast College

women’s swim team swamps the Cuesta Swimming and Diving Invitational

field by more than 100 points. The Pirates finish wit 518.5 points with its closest rival, Diablo Valley, at 412. OCC’s Rori Rangel takes three

events, winning the 100 butterfly (59.47), the 100 individual medley

(1:03.99) and the 200 IM (2:16.27). Kerri Reed wins the 50 breaststroke

in 32.07.

Newport Harbor junior Geoff Abrams, a former two-time national junior

team member, sweeps three of his singles matches as the Sailors win their

Sea View League boys tennis opener, 10-8, over El Toro. John Rinek also

sweeps in singles.

Southern California College, now Vanguard University, holds off a

first-game rally by host Concordia, then comes from behind in the second

game to sweep a Golden State Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader by

identical 7-6 scores. Mike Grasse goes 2 for 5 with two doubles and four

RBIs in the opener. Joe Rivera shines in the second game, going 2 for 4

with a double and three RBIs, then comes on in relief to get the final

three outs for his second save of the season.

Newport Harbor’s boys volleyball team sweeps district rival Estancia,

15-5, 15-3, 15-9. Eric Bernhard records six kills and Matt Caldwell slams

five, with four service aces, to lead the host Sailors to victory.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

Estancia High junior right-hander Kyle Wilson strikes out six and

walks none as he faces the minimum 21 batters to complete a no-hitter,

leading the Eagles’ baseball team to a 5-0 victory over Century. Only a

second-inning error by Estancia’s shortstop interferes with Wilson’s bid

for a perfect game. Wilson throws 66 pitches, 46 for for strikes, as he

hurls no more than 11 pitches in any inning. The no-hitter is the

school’s first since 1986.

Newport Harbor junior right-hander Matt Palaferri strikes out 10 to

lead the Sailors to a 4-1 victory baseball over University. In the third

inning, Russell Olshefski drives in Ben Fine with a sacrifice fly as the

Sailors take a 3-1 edge.

Estancia’s Matt Fuerbringer and Torrey Hammond, both 6-foot-5, lead

the Eagles’ boys volleyball team to its first victory of the season in

their first week of action after leading the school’s basketball team to

a state championship. Fuerbringer has 20 kills while Hammond and Jeff

Byrne add eight blocks each. The Eagles win, 4-15, 15-13, 15-8, 15-9,

against host San Clemente in a nonleague contest. Fuerbringer and Hammond

play in a match two days after winning state in basketball. The duo then

practices but one day to prepare for the first win of the season.

The Corona del Mar baseball team squeezes out a 3-2 victory over

Woodbridge. Neil Weber’s drive finds the alley in left-centerfield for a

double, bringing in Matt Evans in the sixth inning. Tim DeCinces’ RBI

double brings in Todd Kehrli to tie the score in the third. Kehrli

singles in Brady Lamar to start the run.

The Corona del Mar High boys and girls swim teams power to victory

over Back Bay rival Newport Harbor. CdM’s girls swim to a 115-52 win and

the boys score a 105-65 victory. Sea Kings junior Teddy Simpkins, who

qualifies for CIF in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.4, wins two events,

in addition to sprinting the opening leg of CdM’s winning 400 freestyle

relay (3:23.0) and swimming the freestyle portion of the 200 medley

relay. The Sailors’ Joe Haxel wins the 100 butterfly in 58.25. For the

girls, Heidi Edmunds takes the 500 free (5:54.1) and Becky Todd grabs top

honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.2). Newport Harbor’s girls finish

with two double winners in Maureen McLaren (100 butterfly and 100

breaststroke) and Natalie Babazadeh (50 and 100 freestyles).
