It was a busy St. Patrick’s Day for Newport Beach police.

Officers made 28 alcohol-related arrests between 1 p.m. Saturday and 5

a.m. Sunday, said Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman.

Of those incidents, 14 were incidents of disorderly conduct involving

alcohol, 12 were driving-under-the-influence arrests, and two involved

juveniles taken into custody for possessing alcohol, he said.

Only one DUI involved a crash, in which a driver escaped with minor

injuries, Shulman said.

“This is not a high number of arrests for a summer weekend,” he said.

“It is, however, on the higher side.”

No additional officers were deployed on St. Patrick’s Day, he said.

In Costa Mesa, the holiday contributed no unusual numbers of

alcohol-related incidents, authorities said.
