Last weekend’s Southern California Junior Olympics held at the Belmont

Plaza pool in Long Beach featured some of the fastest youth swimmers in

Southern California and Nevada. Huntington Beach’s Scott Schauer turned

in one of the event’s top performances by taking first place in all six

of his events in the boys’ 11-12 Division. In doing so he set three

Southern California records.

Schauer’s first record was set in the 200-yard freestyle, where he

shattered his own previous mark of 1:50.20 by almost three seconds with a

time of 1:47.93.

He won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.77, breaking Jason Hwang’s

previous mark of 50.55, set in 1997.

Schauer also set a record in the 100-yard butterfly, going 54.28 to

eclipse Hwang’s 55.23, also set in 1997.

Schauer, who swims for the Seal Beach Swim Club, took first place in

the 50-yard freestyle (23.14), the 100-yard individual medley (57.03) and

the 200-yard IM (2:03.0).

His sister, Alexis, also had an outstanding meet, winning five of six

events in the girls’ 10-and-Under Division.

She won the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.42), the 50-yard freestyle

(26.48), the 50-yard backstroke (30.77), the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.48)

and the 100-yard freestyle (58.0). She finished second in the 100-yard

butterfly (1:03.64).

Four other locals, also from the Seal Beach Swim Club, turned in top

finishes.

In the boys’ 13-14 Division, Rory Bevins finished fifth in the

200-yard breaststroke (2:18.64), ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke

(1:05.95) and 15th in the 200-yard IM (2:11.95).

Tristan Friend was 12th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.54), 13th in

the 100-yard butterfly (59.28), 10th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.34),

17th in both the 100-yard (1:08.09) and 200-yard (2:26.50) breaststroke

and 11th in the 200-yard IM (2:08.67).

In the same division, Derrick Willits was 13th in the 100-yard

freestyle (52.46) and 18th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.03).

In the girls’ 11-12 Division, Lindsey Buchbinder placed second in the

100-yard breaststroke (1:08.76) and ninth in the 50-yard breaststroke

(33.08).
