OCC remains hot, edges Santiago Canyon

CHINO - The Orange Coast College men’s golf team continued its

impressive play with a 370-383 Orange Empire Conference win over Santiago

Canyon Monday at the par-72 El Prado Golf Course.

The Pirates (14-4, 7-4 in conference) were led by Mike Akahoshi, who

shot a 1-under-par 71. Newport Harbor High graduate Jake Allanach

followed with a 73, while Jason Woodrome (74), Costa Mesa product Lou

Carrasco (76) and Clay Wright (76) completed the Pirates’ top five.

OCC will take on Cypress Monday at 2 p.m. at Westridge Golf Club.

Mustangs fall to Tustin

COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa High boys golf team dropped a 208-221

nonleague decision to Tustin on Monday at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country

Club’s Mesa Linda Course, par 35.

Bryce Sheridan shot 41 to lead the Mustangs, while Michael Gardiner

(42), Steve Whittaker (44), Devon Stevens (46) and Kevin Alexander (48)

completed Costa Mesa’s scoring.

Vanguard beaten by CS Dominguez Hills

CARSON - The Vanguard University baseball team saw its run production

take a day off in Monday’s 10-1 nonconference loss to host Cal State

Dominguez Hills.

Vanguard’s Chad Chop went 2 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, while

Anthony Walker chipped in with two hits for the Lions (19-12).

Joe Gevas, Cedric Gilmore and Steve Hindman each had two hits to lead

the Toros (17-13).

Sea Kings tie El Modena

ORANGE - The Corona del Mar High girls swim team battled host El

Modena to an 85-85 nonleague tie Monday afternoon.

The Sea Kings’ foursome of Emily McKay, Heather Hapeman, Vivian Liao

and Lauren Powers cruised to victories in both the 200- (1:46.20) and

400-yard (3:58.20) freestyle relays. Powers and Liao also teamed with

Christina Hewko and Jackie McCoy to win the 200 medley relay (1:58.51).

McKay (26.54) edged teammate Brittany Bowlus (26.59) in the 50 free

for CdM (2-1-1) and was also victorious in the 100 backstroke (1:04.32).

Powers (57.21) and Hapeman (59.13) led a CdM 1-2 finish in the 100

free. El Modena’s times were unavailable, but the Vanguards did sweep

three different events.

The Sea Kings resume Pacific Coast League action Wednesday when they

host Northwood at 3 p.m.
