Vanguard U. splits with UC San Diego
COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University softball team split its
nonconference doubleheader Monday against visiting UC San Diego.
The Lions (20-12) rallied with two runs in the seventh inning to win
the first game, 3-2, before losing, 8-0, in the nightcap.
Trailing, 2-1, Nikki Benning’s single drove in Celina Camarillo with
the tying run before Jill Jessen’s bases-loaded walk won the game.
Camarillo went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI for Vanguard,
while Gina Liebengood pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn her
10th win of the season.
Andrea Saucedo, Benning, Jessen, Cheri Smith, Rachael Rolle and
Jessica Thompson each had key hits for Vanguard.
Smith scattered five hits over five innings as the Lions’ starting
pitcher. She allowed only one earned run and struck out two.
In the second game, Tritons pitcher Christi Martinelli tossed a
five-inning no-hitter to lead UCSD over Vanguard, 8-0.
A Tritons’ error prevented a perfect game for Martinelli, who struck
out three and walked none.
Vanguard pitchers allowed only two earned runs, but three Lion errors
accounted for the rest.
Amy Mettee went 3 for 4 with three runs scored for UCSD (13-11), while
Jeanine Cordero and Kim Aggabao each added two hits.

Less is Moore for Sailors, who are edged by Tustin, 1-0
GARDEN GROVE - The Newport Harbor High softball team went up against a
buzz-saw pitcher in Monday’s 1-0 loss to Tustin in the Garden Grove
Tournament second-division championship game.
Diane Lariba pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 15 strikeouts.
“She threw a great game today,” Newport Coach Jess Martinson said of the
Tillers’ hurler. “She has a good rise ball, she throws hard and she’s got
great location.”
Sailors hurler Kim Moore matched goose eggs with Lariba for five
innings, but a hit batsman, an error and two walks led to Tustin’s lone
run in the sixth.
“I really felt bad, because Kim pitched a great game for us, too,”
Martinson said. “One bad inning cost us the game.”
Bailey Beardon had both of Newport’s hits, while Athena Vasquez was
named to the all-tournament team.
“The team got a nice trophy and the players all got medals,” Martinson
said. “That’s something that probably hasn’t happened in quite awhile at
Newport Harbor in softball.”
The Sailors (6-5-2) will host Costa Mesa today at 3:15 p.m.
