IRVINE - The Estancia High baseball team left 14 runners stranded

and were left searching for its first Pacific Coast League victory after

Northwood won, 9-8, Tuesday.

Eagles J.D. Goff and Armando Ortiz went 3 for 4. Goff, a junior who

smacked a triple to begin a three-run sixth inning, scored twice. Ortiz,

a senior, finished with an RBI.

“We just left too many guys on base,” Estancia Coach Doug Deats said.

“We played better defense (than in previous games). We had our chances.

We left bases loaded in the fourth and fifth. The difference was clutch

hitting and we didn’t get it.”

Junior Paul Flori went 3 for 5 with one RBI, while junior Casey Gates

finished 2 for 3 for the Eagles (3-7, 0-4 in league).

After Goff’s triple, Ortiz cracked an infield single. Then, Flori

singled in Goff. A fielder’s choice brought in Ortiz and senior Brent

Davis scored on an error. That inning, however, ended with a Northwood

double play.

The Eagles scored three runs in the seventh to overcome the deficit,

9-8. With the bases loaded, Ortiz singled in senior Andy Romo. And

Flori’s base hit brought in junior Mitch Valdes. Davis, who popped a

sacrifice fly to score Ortiz, was the tying run left on base.

The Timberwolves (1-7, 1-3) won their first game of the

season.Estancia will seek its first PCL win when it hosts University on

Friday as the Pacific Coast League baseball wars continue.
