SCHOOL BOARD WRAP-UP

WHAT HAPPENED:

The school board approved moving summer school from Estancia High

School to Costa Mesa High School this summer.

WHAT IT MEANS:

While there may be additional traffic problems at Costa Mesa with the

Orange County Fair, students won’t end up in the dark. Estancia is one of

the sites targeted by Southern California Edison for energy-use

reduction. That means the school is one of the sites expected to conserve

energy wherever possible.

WHAT HAPPENED:

After a lengthy debate, the school board decided not to form a

subcommittee to participate in the Measure A planning just yet. Instead

they will sit as observers at the next several meetings with the

oversight committee and project management firm. They will also have the

group give them a progress report at the next school board meeting on

April 10.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Having carefully chosen the members who make up the citizens oversight

committee, Trustee Wendy Leece said that she did not feel comfortable

forming a subcommittee that may have influence or be perceived by the

public to have influence over the groups decision making. Leece also felt

that each board member should be equally informed. While other trustees

disagreed with Leece, they agreed to try an alternate method of keeping

up to date on the groups’ progress.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board adopted a resolution recognizing the month of April as

public schools month.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The state board of education has declared April public schools month

with the theme: “Public School: Cornerstone for the New Millennium.”

Schools and communities are encouraged to develop activities to support

the month.
