For the world’s largest international yacht race, which takes place

April 27, organizers have arranged a pre-race week of activities.

The Welcome to Newport Beach Classic Car & Boat Show will happen April

21, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Lido Marina Village. The event, which is free

and open to the public, features classic cars, spectacular boats and

racing yachts, a clam chowder cook-off, Parrot Head Party, the “Jim

Mahoney Band” playing classic rock, country and Jimmy Buffett tunes, and

a special visit from the Corona del Mar High School band.

The Yachtsmen’s Luncheon, hosted by the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of

Commerce, will honor notable yachtsmen and feature speaker Robbie Haines,

a Pyewachet crewman, who will share his fascinating history of Transpac

video footage and commentary on April 26 at the Balboa Pavilion from

11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations: (949) 729-4400.

The pre-race fiesta on April 26 is a fun-filled night to remember.

Thousands will gather to celebrate corporate sponsors, sailors, crewmen

and the race itself. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. at the Bahia Corinthian

Yacht Club in Corona del Mar.

The 54th Annual Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race,

organized by the Newport Ocean Sailing Assn., begins April 27 at 12 p.m.

Spectators can view the race start and learn what is happening on the

water from a narrator on Lookout Point at the Bluffs above Corona del Mar

State Beach beginning at 11:30 a.m.
