Sailors hold on to beat Woodbridge in five

IRVINE - Newport Harbor High’s boys volleyball team continues to

give its fans a case of hives as the Sailors pulled out an 11-15, 12-15,

15-10, 15-7, 15-12 Sea View League victory at Woodbridge High Tuesday

night.

“We’re having some growing pains,” said the Sailors’ coach, Dan Glenn,

who watched his Orange County Tournament champions improve to 4-4, 2-1 in

league. Woodbridge is also 2-1 in Sea View circles.

“We’re working hard in practice and maybe we’re getting a little

tired. And, we’re playing some good teams,” continued Glenn.

Whatever the case, the Sailors were in desperate straights after two,

then caught fire, only to find themselves in a tight situation in Game 5

as Woodbridge surged to an 11-7 lead.

Blake Tippett was strong in his service game at that point and somehow

the Sailors wound up with the 15-12 edge.

“I told them afterward we won despite ourselves,” said Glenn. “We were

lucky to win that match.”

Tippett, at about 80% as he continues on the mend from an ankle

injury, was the Sailors’ key player with 34 kills.

Christian Berg-Hansen had 20 kills and Greg Perrine contributed 24

kills. Morgan Craig had nine kills and Loyd Wright was credited with 83

assists.

The Sailors get a little breather at this point with a bye on Friday

and will use the open date for their annual alumni game, starting at

6:30.

Glenn is seeking alumni players and asks they contact the athletic

office at 515-6308.
