The Huntington Beach Children’s Needs Task Force will present the

American Youth Character Awards, a recognition program that will honor

young people solely for achievements that demonstrate an enduring

commitment to qualities associated with good character.

Nominees must be in kindergarten through 12th grade and reside in

Huntington Beach. Anyone can make a nomination, which are due by 4 p.m.

April 20. Forms are available at the city’s Community Services

Department, 2000 Main St., Huntington Beach.

Students will be recognized May 12.

Anyone interested in contributing to the Character Awards and becoming

a community character builder can call the community services department

at (714) 536-5496.

Seminar on notary public exam planned

Golden West College’s Community Services Office will offer a one-day

notary public exam preparation seminar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in

the Health Sciences Building, Room 117.

The seminar will provide information on the exam, which participants

will be required to take every four hours.

It costs $75, plus $20 for materials payable at the seminar.

The Official California State Notary Public Exam will be administered

immediately following the seminar from 4:15 to 5 p.m. Bring a check

payable to the Secretary of State for $40, a current driver’s license

with a photo or state issued ID card and two No. 2 pencils.

Donations sought for Grad-Night Party

Fountain Valley High School parents are organizing the 14th annual

Grad-Night Party for the class of 2001. The party for students will be at

the school, 17816 Bushard St., on June 13 following the graduation

ceremony and continue to 5 a.m.

The popular night of tradition for seniors will include fun, food,

dancing, entertainment and prizes.

The committee needs donations from companies, clubs and individuals to

help cover expenses and provide door prized for the event. Donations are

tax deductible.

Classes of 1961 to hold reunions

Huntington Beach and Westminster high schools’ classes of 1961 will

hold their reunions July 28. For more information, call (714) 847-8459 or

Reading program offered at college

Golden West College’s Community Services Office will offer a series of

reading enrichment programs for those 4 years old and up in Huntington

Beach.

Instructors are provided by the Institute of Reading Development.

Tuition varies by program level.

Golden West benefit raises $65,276

Golden West College’s Fund-Raising Gala 2001 raised $65,726.

The night of dinner, dancing, music by the Jumpin’ Joz Band and a

silent and live auction was a success. A portion of the funds supports

the Wish List program that has been used to buys scanners, oxygen meter,

listening headsets, educational videotapes and training materials.

The fourth annual event was underwritten by Elmore Toyota, Ezralow

Retail Management Associates, LLC, Karen and Doug Fabian, Fountain Valley

Regional Hospital, Huntington Beach Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital and

Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc.

Mater Dei students’ poetry is published

Mater Dei High students Annie Liu and Taylor Taney of Fountain Valley

and Peter Pham and Nina Tran of Huntington Beach had their poetry

published into an anthology titled “A Celebration of Young Poets.”

The students each received certificates of recognition and earned the

school an invitation to apply for a $250 grant to be used to purchase

resources for the school’s English Department.
