Girls track and field: Depth runs deep for CdM girls

CORONA DEL MAR - If Corona del Mar High girls track and field coach

Bill Sumner decided to reward individual event winners with a day off,

today’s practice would be an awfully lonely affair.

No less than 10 CdM competitors won individual events Thursday to

propel the hosts to a 110-35 Pacific Coast League victory over Estancia.

But while Sumner is bullish on balance, he was less than giddy about

the lopsided triumph, which kept the 5-1 Sea Kings undfeated in three

league dual meets.

“We didn’t want to have a big day today,” Sumner said. “We just want

to get through here and have a good day Saturday (at the Orange County

Championships at Trabuco Hills High).”

It was a productive day, however, for the CdM winners, including

senior Jaycee Mahler, who swept the 100-meter, as well as the 300

hurdles.

Estancia junior Hanni Geider edged her twin sister Jasmine in the 100

and 200 to pace the visitors, who also received a victory in the 3,200

from senior Liz Huipe.

CdM’s Jenning Cummins (400), Julie Allen (800) and Katie Quinlan

(1,600) won their respective events, while the hosts swept the field

events.

Alison Brawner (high jump), Jacqueline Thayer (long jump), Jessica

Palermo (triple jump), Krisserin Canary (pole vault), Carrie Hawkins

(shot put) and Carolyn Shettler (discus) were all tops in their field.

The hosts also won the 1,600 relay, but a dropped baton cost them the

400 relay, which Estancia (3-1, 2-1 in league) captured with the help of

both Geiders, Crystal Rincon and Sarah Marx.

Both Geiders were clocked at 13.0 in the 100, but Hanni earned the

nod. Hanni then edged her sister by three-tenths of a second in the 200.

Quinlan won the 1,600 in 5:27.3, despite shin splints and the presence

of Allen.

“Julie wasn’t running hard today,” said Quinlan, who did not compete

in the 3,200 or help on any relays in order to remain fresh for Saturday.

Sumner identified Allen (1,600 and 3,200), Cummins (800) and Mahler

(both hurdles) as potential title contenders Saturday. He also said the

1,600 relay quartet of Mahler, Cummins, Becky Cummins and Katherine Morse

could earn a medal.
