CdM swimmers sparkle

BELMONT SHORE - Corona del Mar High girls swim coach Doug Volding

was all smiles Thursday following his team’s standout showing at the CIF

Relays Preliminaries at Belmont Plaza.

All seven of his teams qualified for Saturday’s finals, with three

teams earning berths in the championship bracket.

Brittney Bowlus led off the 6 x 50 free with a CIF-qualifying time of

25.72 as CdM logged a fourth-place effort of 2:34.98. With Bowlus were

Kim McKay, Christina Hewko, Jackie McCoy, Vivian Liao and Lauren Powers.

The 4 x 100 free team of Heather Hapeman, McKay, Liao and Powers

combined for a third-place time of 3:44.62, and the 4 x 50 back quartet

of McKay, Hewko, Jessica Harkins and Liao was eighth in 1:59.92.

“Everyone (including Irvine) was there,” noted Volding, validating his

smile.

Earning bids in the consolation finals were the 4 x 100 individual

medley (16th at 4:32.35), 4 x 50 breast (11th at 2:20.0), 4 x 50 medley

(1:59.2) and 4 x 50 butterfly (15th at 2:04.46).
