OCC PROFESSOR ROTARY SCHOLAR: Carol Burke, professor of literature and

language at Orange Coast College, will be traveling to Peru on May 14 for

a three-month teaching assignment at the University of Santa Maria,

thanks to a Rotary International Foundation grant of $10,000. Burke was

hosted at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Newport Balboa this week by

Rotarian Bob Silver for the formal check presentation.

According to Wendell Sawyer, president of the Rotary Club, Rotary

District 5320 offers two University Teacher Abroad grants annually to

assist college- and university-level faculty to teach in third-world

countries. While in Peru, Burke will be teaching English and a class on

20th Century American women writers. He will be seeking to organize an

exchange of students and faculty between OCC and the University of Santa

Maria in future years. At OCC, Burke serves as president of the Academic

Senate.

GIRLS STATE: Five young women have been selected by the American

Legion Auxiliary of Newport Harbor Unit 291 to attend Girls State at

Pitzer College in Claremont from June 25 to July 1. According to Cynthia

Culpa of the Auxiliary, those selected were Hani Charezaie, Estancia High

School; Lea Alfi, Costa Mesa High School; Valerie Atkins, Corona del Mar

High School; Allison McKenzie, Newport Harbor High School; and Lora

Silver, Irvine High School. Culp notes that the delegates were selected

because of excellence of character and citizenship and are in the upper

third of their class scholastically. They will join 500 other young women

from throughout the state for the one-week conference.

GRADUATION DAY: A graduation and open house at the Harbor Justice

Center, Orange County Superior Court will be held on Monday for the those

completing the new drug court program. According to Ron Millar, president

of the Rotary Club of Newport Beach Sunrise, the club will provide a gift

for the graduates -- two tickets to Disney’s new California Adventure.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERS CAMP: The Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa is

looking for four high school juniors from Costa Mesa and Newport Beach

who would like to learn more about leadership while spending an all

expenses paid weekend at Camp Idyllwild. Some 200 high school juniors

from throughout Orange County will learn from top experts about

leadership, values and motivating others the weekend of April 27-29. If

you would like to apply for one of the four vacancies, call club

552 CLUB STAG SHOOT: Sit-ups are underway for the May 9 20th annual

Invitational Stag Shoot held at Prado Olympic Shooting Park in Chino.

It’s a skeet-shooting event that’s fun and raises funds for the 552 Club

and the new Hoag Women’s Pavilion. Participation is limited. Call (949)
