Looking back, five years ago this week.

The Corona del Mar High baseball team pounds Bishop Montgomery, 13-0,

for fifth place in the Pride of the Coast Tournament. Sea Kings Kevin

Stuart and Chad Johnson maintain a friendly rivalry as they battle for

the team lead in home runs. Stuart hammers two homers and Johnson smacks

one out. Together they combine for 11 of CdM’s 17 home runs at this point

of the season. Stuart, who finishes 3 for 4, takes the team lead in home

runs, one over his buddy Johnson, when he crushes a line drive over

center field. Sea King Reuben Gulledge also finishes 3 for 4.

The Costa Mesa baseball team flattens Edison, 7-0, as Mustangs pitcher

Jeremy Starns allows five hits in the shutout. Matt Broesamle goes 3 for

3 at the plate, including a two-run double and a ground rule double,

which earns him another RBI. It is the sixth straight victory for Coach

Doug Deats’ Mustangs.

The Newport Harbor baseball team takes care of Laguna Beach, 11-4, as

the Sailors score four unearned runs. Andy Langsdorf hammers a solo home

run, his second of the season, to key a six-run second inning. He

finishes off that inning with a two-run single. Pitcher Jesse Collins,

called up from the frosh-soph, earns his first varsity win.

Kevin Carlson, of Southern California College (now Vanguard

University), soars to a high jump clearance of 7-2 1/2 to top the field

at the BFI Track and Field Meet of Champions at Azusa Pacific University.

Carlson also earns the Male Athlete of the Meet award. Iris Orejel sets

individual school records in the women’s 100- (12.94) and 200-meters

(25.82). She also contributes to a school record in the 1,600 relay as

Aimee Buxman, Caren Anderson and Nikee Pool join her. Angie LaMance also

sets a school record in the women’s triple jump (33-6 3/4).

The Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team avenges its only loss

of the season with a convincing, 15-7, 15-4, 16-14, victory over San

Diego Mesa. Mike Pixler records 22 kills, while Brad Callahan slams 17

and Troy Langley has 13. Matt Wright is credited with 53 assists. It is

the Pirates’ 13th straight victory.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

The Costa Mesa High baseball team rallies to pull off a 4-3 triumph

over visiting Trabuco Hills. With two outs, the bases loaded and the

score tied, 3-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Hector Perdoma

takes one for the team. He is hit by the first pitch in the middle of his

back, an RBI for Perdoma and a complete game victory for Mesa pitcher Ed

Pico. The Mustangs respond from a 3-1 deficit with single tallies in the

fifth and sixth innings.

Estancia right-handeder Chris Watson allows just two unearned runs and

six hits en route to a complete-game 13-3 victory over Laguna Beach.

Watson, who improves to 5-1, also belts his first home run of the season.

Paul McDaniels goes 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Every

starter on the Eagles’ lineup has at least one hit each. “He’s so

complete, he can get by on average,” Estancia co-coach Paul Troxell says

of Watson.

The Newport Harbor boys volleyball team sweeps host Tustin, 15-12,

15-6, 15-5. Sailors setter Russell Gan has 44 assists, while Mark McAnlis

and Matt Sherwood finish with eight kills each.

The Estancia boys volleyball team scores a 14-16, 15-8, 15-10, 15-7

victory over Trabuco Hills. John Johansen comes off the bench to spark

the Eagles with nine blocks. Ty Schisler slams six kills and pounds four

blocks, while setter Jason Javage adds 32 assists.

Newport Harbor’s Eva Mattson, Katryna Neira and Gina Heads are double

winners in the Sailors’ girls track and field team’s 80-43 win over

Tustin. Mattson crosses the finish line first in the 1,600- (5:33.1) and

3,200-meters (11:56.0), Neira wins the 200 (27.1) and 400 (1:02.9) and

Heads throws the discus 114 feet, and the shot put, 37-6, for a pair of

victories.

Costa Mesa freshman Kevin Runge wins the mile (4:56.65) and two-mile

races (11:00.03) as the Mustangs boys track and field team completes an

87-39 victory over Trabuco Hills. David Phillips and Willie Noonan are

also double winners. Phillips wins the 200 (25.3) and shot put (45-1

3/4). Noonan grabs victories in the 400 (55.59) and 330 intermediate

hurdles (44.57).
