Estancia sweeps Westminster

WESTMINSTER - Estancia High seniors Jennifer Cassity and Somer

Flaherty each won two events to help the Eagles earn an 85-76 nonleague

girls swimming victory Monday at Westminster.

Cassity won the 50-yard freestyle (27.58) and the 200 free (2:17.46),

while Flaherty topped the field in the 200 individual medley (2:54.47)

and the 100 breaststroke (1:29.0).

Jayme Fay (500 free in 7:21.0) and the 400 free relay team of Fay,

Lauren Collier, Britta Pitti and Jesse Adams, were also winners for the

Eagles (2-6), who have won two dual meets in a row.

Laura Rodriguez (100 butterfly), Ashley Gardner (500 free) and Fay

(200 free) earned second-place finishes, while Pitti (200 IM), Arwin

Knott (50 free), Stephanie Reid (100 fly) and Collier (100 free) earned third-place points for the winners.

The Estancia boys also defeated the Lions, 95-66, as Frank Gamboa and

Brian Monette won two events each and also contributed to a pair of

victorious relays.

Gamboa won the 200 IM (2:31.11) and the 500 free (6:06.27), while

Monette touched first in the 50 and 100 free (25.87 and 1:01.39,

respectively). Both swam a leg on the winning 200 medley and 200 free

relays.

Phil Westfall (200 free in 2:09.53) and David Teixeira (100 fly in

1:09.46) were additional winners. Teixeira was also on both relays and

Westfall chipped in on the winning free relay.

Westfall was also second in the 100 fly to help Coach John Carpenter’s

Eagles improve to 5-3.

Paul Collier (500 free), Kris Hartwell (100 backstroke) and David

Silva (100 breaststroke) also earned second-place points, while Collier

(200 IM), Teixeira (100 breaststroke) and Jason Wong (100 back) added

third-place efforts.

The Eagles’ boys and girls teams venture to Heritage Park Wednesday to

meet Pacific Coast League rival Northwood.

Martinovich twins shine

COSTA MESA - Costa Mesa High seniors Wendy and Jody Martinovich each

won two individual events and also chipped in on a winning relay, but the

Mustangs lost to nonleague girls swimming visitor Woodbridge, 105-61,

Monday.

Wendy Martinovich won the 200-yard individual medley (2:27.19) and the

100 breaststroke (1:14.08), while Jody won the 200 (2:06.75) and 500

freestyle (5:37.51) events.

Mesa’s Erin Bayes shared victory in the 100 free (55.77) and was

second in the 50 free (25.77).

In the boys meet, the Mustangs received winning efforts from senior

Mike Whitman (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke) and Steven Thomas (200

free in 2:17.81) in a 108-39 loss to Woodbridge. Whitman went 1:00.69 in

the fly and 1:08.75 in the breaststroke.

Mueller is medalist

LONG BEACH - Estancia High junior boys golfer Joey Mueller shot

4-over-par 76 Monday to earn medalist honors in the Millikan Tournament

at the El Dorado Park Golf Course.

Mueller birdied the par-4 No. 2 and the par-5 No. 4 to help Estancia

finish fifth as a team.

Warriors edge Tars

IRVINE - Visiting Newport Harbor High stranded eight in a 1-0 Sea View

League softball setback against host Woodbridge Monday at Alton Park.

Stephanie Ciralli and Bailey Bearden each had hits for the Sailors

(9-10, 0-3 in league), but it wasn’t enough to support a complete-game

four-hitter by Harbor pitcher Kim Moore (five strikeouts).
