CONTROL OF HIGHWAY

Corona del Mar village leaders are working on a plan to turn East

Coast Highway into a pedestrian-oriented shopping and dining district.

Vision 2004, set to coincide with the village’s centennial, would add

parks along the highway’s median, repave sidewalks and add benches and

water fountains in the area.

In order to make the changes, the city will have to take control over

the highway from the state Department of Transportation.

To make it happen this year, council members must adopt a resolution

requesting that the California Transportation Commission support

relinquishment of Caltrans’ authority over the segment of Coast Highway.

What to expect: The City Council is expected to support the

resolution.

GENERAL PLAN UPDATE

For several months, members of the city’s ad hoc general plan update

committee have discussed ways to involve residents in deciding how

Newport Beach should look in the future.

They have come up with a process that would lay the foundation for an

update of the city’s general plan, the document that serves as the city’s

visionary road map.

The program, which would take several months to complete and includes

things such as a citywide festival, neighborhood workshops and a

telephone survey, is expected to cost about $221,500.

What to expect: The council is expected to approve the program.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

As part of the city’s electric vehicle program, city officials are

asking for $13,176 to lease three Toyota RAV-4 electric cars and extend

the lease of a Honda EV Plus.

The city now has 20 electric cars, which are used by city employees in

different departments.

What to expect: The council is expected to approve the request.

LIDO ISLE ROAD REPAIRS

In order to fix the deteriorating asphalt on Lido Isle’s Via Lido Nord

and Via Lido Soud, city officials have prepared a contract with Ruiz

Engineering Co. to work on the streets.

The project will cost about $261,017, but city officials also are

asking for an extra $26,000 for any unforeseen work.

What to expect: The council is expected to approve the contract.
