Boys and girls swimming: Sailor girls come up in clutch

LAKE FOREST - The Newport Harbor High girls swim team took the top

two finishes in the final two meets and won the last relay to hold off

host El Toro in a 89-81 nonleague victory Tuesday. The Sailors’ boys team

easily won, 94-76, taking eight first-place finishes.

The Newport girls squad (5-1) and Chargers (4-4) were tied, 70-70,

after a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke that included sophomores

Nicole Mackey (58.91 in first) and Mai Tajima (1:03.05).

Newport junior Carly Geehr then won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.92) and

senior Jennifer Arrow provided more points with a second-place finish

(1:10.22).

Geehr, Tajima, Mackey and sophomore Hayley Peirsol earned victory in

the 400 freestyle relay (3:42.05) to secure the win.

Newport Harbor junior Ryan Lean won the 200 (1:45.80) and 500 (4:58.47) freestyle races for the Tars’ boys team (4-2). Harbor sophomore

Andrew Cole was also a double winner with victories in the 100 freestyle

(49.37) and 100 backstroke (54.20), while junior speedster Aaron Peirsol

took first in the 200 individual medley and senior Peter Belden grabbed

first in the 50 freestyle (22.84).
