Community College news: OCC athletes take success to the classroom

COSTA MESA - Orange Coast College student-athletes proved last fall

they fare just as well in the classroom as on the playing fields. All 11

fall and winter teams finished in the upper half of the conference

standings, nine qualified for postseason play and four advanced to the

final round of state tournaments.

Meanwhile, 81 student-athletes from those teams earned a grade-point

average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including eight 4.0 scholars and

25 more who earned between a 3.5 and 3.99.

OCC’s Karyn Fierst (women’s basketball), Erin Kennedy (women’s water

polo), Rob Pate (football), Christiane Reimer (women’s cross country),

Jessica Siani (women’s soccer), Lauren Wilson (women’s volleyball), as

well as Chris Coburn and Chris Wimmer (men’s soccer) all earned a 4.0

GPA.

Overall, the Pirates’ student-athletes completed an average of 12.35

units with a 2.90 GPA. The OCC women’s soccer team, coached by Barbara

Bond, posted the best overall GPA (3.11). Women’s water polo, women’s

basketball, women’s volleyball and women’s golf averaged better than 3.0.
