Krista Sunderman of Huntington Beach, an honors student and a diver

for the University of Nevada (Reno) team, qualified for the final rounds

of competition on the 1- and 3-meter springboards and the platform at the

Western Athletic Conference meet last month. The event was held in San

Antonio, Texas. Sunderman is among the top eight divers in the conference

in all three events. Sunderman, now a junior, began diving as a freshman

at Huntington Beach High School. She is a 1998 graduate of HBHS and the

daughter of Huntington Beach resident Nancy Bates ... Charles Anthony

Marino III of Huntington Beach has graduated with a degree in finance at

Southern Missouri State University ... Fountain Valley resident Chris

Ponchak has been promoted to sales agent at JMG Security Systems, where

he will have marketing responsibility for the north Orange County region.

... Marine Corps Pvt. Jose M. Martinez of Huntington Beach has completed

basic training at the Marine Crops Recruit Depot in San Diego. Martinez

successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new

Marine recruits both physically and mentally. He is a 2000 graduate of

Huntington Beach High School ... Huntington Beach resident Adrian K.

Walas has joined the United States Army Reserve under the Delayed

Training Program. He is the son of Henryka Walas ... Army Pvt. Pedro C.

Cardenas III of Fountain Valley has graduated from basic infantry

training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. He received training in drill

and ceremonies, weapons, tactics, first aid and physical fitness. He is

the son of Pedro C. and Dolores Cardenas ... Stephen D. Martinez of

Huntington Beach reenlisted in the Marines for three years and was

promoted to sergeant. He served at the Headquarters Squadron at the

now-closed El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. He is the son of Linda A.

Martinez.
