Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team and visiting Woodbridge

battle to a 9-9 tie, and the Sea Kings come out on top, 81-75, in games.

Greg Coleman fights off the stomach flu to team up with doubles partner,

Raj Shukla, and picks up a critical point for CdM. The team victory also

assures the Sea Kings the Sea View League championship. Boris Turkich

sweeps all three of his singles matches and Taylor Dent takes two of

three.

Newport Harbor’s pitcher Molli Mullen strikes out seven in her one-hit

performance, leading the Sailors’ softball team to a 4-0 victory over

Back Bay rival Corona del Mar. Sea Kings’ pitcher Hayden Aley gives up

just one earned run, but her teammates commit five errors as she also

throws a complete game. Newport’s Shawn Talley, who connects for a base

hit, scores on a passed ball. Kyle McNichols does the same for a 2-0 lead

and Desiree Talley smacks a two-run single to score Mullen and Mindi

Alford who also single to reach. It is revenge for Mullen as she is on

the losing end the previous season when the Sea Kings’ win, 8-7.

The Orange Coast College baseball team rallies from deficits of 5-0

and 9-7 to stun rival Golden West, 12-11, in 12 innings. The Pirates

score twice in the eighth to tie the game then take a 10-9 lead when Adam

Cancelieri scores on a wild pitch in the ninth. But, the Rustlers answer

to send the game into extra innings. OCC then scores two more runs in the

12th. Deric Yanagisawa goes 3 for 6 with two RBIs for the Pirates.

In boys track and field, Newport Harbor’s Chuck Loo sparkles with a

quadruple first-place output in a 92-42 loss at Woodbridge. He wins the

110 high hurdles (16.2), ties a personal record in the high jump (6-2)

for a victory, burns the competition with first place in the 300

intermediate hurdles (42.7) and caps his extraordinary performance with a

performance with a personal-best 41-2 to win the triple jump. He is

two-tenths of a second off his personal best in the 300 intermediate

hurdles.

In college softball, Southern California College, now Vanguard

University, erupts for 11 runs in the second inning en route to a 26-3

triumph over Golden West Athletic Conference host Biola, in five innings.

The victory is so decisive, the Eagles forfeit the second game of the

doubleheader. Angela Wolf, who scores twice, goes 5 for 5, including two

doubles and seven RBIs, while Angie Vega goes 4 for 6 with two doubles

and five RBIs to lead SCC’s 26-hit attack. Pitcher Jen Houston strikes

out six and yields just one earned run. Jen Caruso, Heather Rogers and

Houston finish with three hits each.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team uses four games to take

care of Back Bay rival Corona del Mar, 11-15, 15-7, 15-5, 15-4, in the

Sea Kings’ gym. Coach Dan Glenn’s Sailors are led by Beau Sheward and

Mark McAnlis who have 15 kills each, while Justin McIntee has nine kills.

“I haven’t had a team play well in this gym for a long time,” Glenn says.

“I was nervous coming in. CdM hadn’t really been playing well lately. I

thought they’d come out ready for us.”

The Costa Mesa boys tennis team makes history with its 13-5 victory

over crosstown rival Estancia. It is believed to be the first-ever

Mustangs’ win over the Eagles in boys tennis. Costa Mesa’s doubles teams

of Vinh Dinh and Steve Tehrani along with Jason Regala and Son Dang

contribute with victories to dominate the issue.

Newport Harbor’s right-handed pitcher Matt Palaferri spins a no-hitter

to lead the Sailors baseball team to a 3-0 win at University. Palaferri

strikes out 13 and retires 19 of the 21 batters he faces. He hits one and

another Trojan reaches on an error. Aaron McKown singles and later races

home on Tim Murphy’s double. Chris Carden belts an RBI single for a 2-0

lead. McKown finishes 3 for 4 with a stolen base.

The Corona del Mar baseball team posts three straight victories in the

week. The Sea Kings start off with a 12-7 win in El Modena, then two days

later a 15-4 pounding on Morningside in the Pride of the Coast

Tournament. The very next day, CdM takes down host Woodbridge with a 5-3

Sea View League victory. Freshman Dan MacMillan, a right-handed pitcher,

leads the Tars to victory at Woodbridge, while Todd Kehrli goes 3 for 4

with three RBIs and Brady Lamar finishes with an RBI triple. CdM junior

Tim DeCinces goes 3 for 3 with four RBIs in the Sea Kings’ 14-hit attack

in the win over Morningside. Neil Weber finishes 3 for 5 with four RBIs

and Lamar is 2 for 4 with a home run, driving in two and scoring three

runs.

The Estancia baseball team uses eight hits to take care of host

Century, 7-1. Ruben Mora gets the Eagles off to a big start with a solo

home run in the first inning. Mora also has a double and scores twice.

Paul McDaniels goes 1 for 2 with a walk and he’s hit by a pitch. He

manages to score three runs while stealing a pair of bases. Senior

right-hander Chris Watson strikes out eight batters while allowing three

hits in six innings.
