Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul Kulig of Costa Mesa recently served

as one of 300 officers and sailors aboard the destroyer USS Elliot.

Kulig, 21, is the son of Ted LeBlanc of Costa Mesa. . . . Costa Mesa

Senior Center will honor several community volunteers April 27, including

City Manager Allan Roeder. . . . Hunter Alvarado, an eighth-grader at

Ensign Elementary School, recently received first place overall in the

2001 Orange County Academic Pentathlon. He was awarded second place in

the math and literature categories and first place in social science. .

. . Air Force Airman Aaron B. Smith recently graduated from basic

training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He is the son of Mary Yuro

of Costa Mesa. . . . Eleven teams of second-year Orange Coast College

architecture students recently submitted entries in a design competition

sponsored by the Orange County Council of Governments. Winners will be

announced May 9. . . . McCarthy Building Cos., one of California’s

largest commercial builders, recently hired Cindy Turner and Leo Ramirez

for its Newport Beach office.
