IN FAVOR

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board approved new science standards and curriculum for middle

school students.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Middle school science teachers unanimously endorsed the new textbook,

“Science Explorer: Focus on Earth, Life and Physical Science.”

Along with this new book and others, the board adopted the new state

standards and lab modules such as land forms, rocks and minerals,

electric circuits, organisms and plants.

WHAT HAPPENED:

Catherine Follett, the assistant superintendent of instruction,

presented the board with the remediation/retention progress report.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The district has 249 students in grades second through eighth who are

identified as being at risk of being retained at the end of the summer

school session.

Retention assessment is based on grades, Stanford 9 scores and the

district’s Benchmark exam scores.

All students who are at-risk must attend summer school.

At the end of the last school year, the district had about 61 students

identified as at-risk. Ultimately, 12 were retained.

IN FAVOR

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board approved the proposed expenditures of the High

Achieving/Improving Schools Program for Moiola School and Fulton Middle

School.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The state awarded funds to schools that meet or exceed specified

growth targets as measured by the Academic Performance Index. Fulton will

receive $42,867, and Moiola will get $36,789. The two schools plan to

spend the money on science materials, technology equipment, books,

furniture and other instructional material.

NEXT MEETING

The Fountain Valley School District board will meet at 7:30 p.m. May

10 in the district board room, 17210 Oak St., Fountain Valley.
