Lightning strikes late, beating Whalers, 3-2

Alex DeVries set up Max DeVries with the game-winning shot,

culminating a tense final period of play to carry the Lightning to a 3-2

victory over the Whalers in Norris Division weekend play at Coast 2 Coast

Inline Hockey Center in Huntington Beach.

The Lightning came up with a balanced scoring attack, as Dean

Metherell and Dimiti Coutsoyannopolous each scored goals, and both teamed

with Timothy Tauber, David Daley and Alex DeVries in the assists

department.

Lightning goalie Kyle Morrill recorded 25 saves.

Kevin Koeller and Brett Morinaka scored for the Whalers, with assists

by Kyle Fiscus and Lewis Gifford, and 19 saves by goalie Janien Barber.

IN OTHER GAMES:

* Menehunes 5, Stars 4

Rinald Hancock scored unassisted in an overtime shootout session to

lift the Menehunes to victory. It was the second of two goals by Hancock,

and teammate Casidhe Kunichika also scored two goals. Menehunes’ goalie

Daniel Ane had 21 saves.

For the Stars, Dylan Miller scored twice, Jacob Butters and James

Newman each scored once, Brett Harper, Taylor Song and Kyle Impelman each

had an assist, and goalie Christopher Lowry had 17 saves.

* Jr. Ice Dogs 6, Kings 2

Ryan Kalama netted three goals to power the Jr. Ice Dogs.

Sam Slosman and Hunter Nelson both scored, Zach Gillespie and Jason

Sarna had assists, and goalie Damian Raburn had 25 saves for the Kings.

* Red Wings 6, Coyotes 4

Casey Childers scored a division-high four goals and Kyle Ferramola

and D.J. Mihalik each scored once to lead the Red Wings.

The Coyotes’ Kevin Lassen scored two goals, and Ryan Ward and Nathan

Hoffman each scored.
