The boats may have gotten off to a good start in this year’s Newport

to Ensenada International Yacht Race, but the festivities didn’t go quite

a smoothly for at least one spectator watching from the shore.

Around 1:30 p.m. Friday, the city’s firefighters responded to an

accident call from Newport Harbor Yacht Club. When they arrived on the

scene, they discovered that a man had injured his left wrist and right

ankle after slipping and falling while moving a three-foot by three-foot

grill top, said Capt. John Blauer, a spokesman with the fire department.

Blauer said the man was taken to Hoag Hospital and added that it was

unclear whether he’d broken either his wrist or his ankle.

Club officials declined to comment on the incident.
