Boys tennis: CdM individuals roll into semis

NEWPORT BEACH - On cue, defending Pacific Coast League singles

champion Cameron Ball of Corona del Mar High, along with teammates and

reigning PCL doubles champions Michael Bean and Peter Kulmaticki,

advanced to the league semifinals today at 3 p.m. at the Balboa Bay Club

Racquet Club.

Ball, a junior, swept Costa Mesa senior Vijay Lilaram without dropping

a game and beat teammate Justin Ning in the quarterfinals Tuesday, 6-0,

6-1.

Bean and Kulmaticki, seeded second behind teammates Brian Morton and

Garrett Snyder, advanced to the semifinals after sweeping University’s

Nam Nguyen and Michael Marini, who beat Costa Mesa’s Marvin Lam and

Michael Chindalah in the first round, 6-2, 6-3.

Morton-Snyder, who reached the boys interscholastic 18s doubles final

at Ojai last week, defeated Mesa’s Coung Nguyen and Spencer Solomon in

the quarterfinals. Nguyen, a senior, and Solomon, a junior, knocked off

Uni’s Andy Joe and Jeff Kim in the most riveting match of the day, 6-3,

3-6, 6-1.

Morton-Snyder will face Laguna Beach’s Anton Brandt and Jeff Ferguson

in the upper-bracket semifinals at the BBC Racquet Club, while

Bean-Kulmaticki play Uni’s Anson Hsu and Edwin Chen in the other

semifinal.

In singles, second-seeded Ball will face Uni’s Jeff Lawrence, the

third seed, in the semifinals, while top-seeded Aaron Yovan of University

will play Northwood’s Andrew Cho, the fourth seed. Yovan defeated Ball

last week at Ojai.
