Edison student wins essay contest

Prevent Child Abuse-Orange County held its eighth annual Blue Ribbon

Campaign to create child abuse awareness during National Child Abuse

Prevention Month. Among the activities was a Blue Ribbon Essay Contest

with the theme “Embrace the Future and Put Children First.”

Edison High School 10th-grader Jonathan Boustani won the essay contest

in the high school category.

Students honored for dance talents

Huntington Beach High School students Noelle Menard and Elizabeth

Chasteler were semifinalists in the dance category of the Emerging Young

Artist Awards.

The Emerging Young Artist Awards seeks to identify and support

talented young artists who do not have the financial resources to pursue

higher education in their artistic discipline.

The girls are part of a select group of 12 young dancers chosen from

more than 730 throughout the state to compete for a $20,000 scholarship

award.

Finalists will be announced later this month.

Middle schools named distinguished schools

Four local schools were named Distinguished California Schools.

Ocean View School District’s Vista View, Mesa View and Marine View

middle schools and Fountain Valley School District’s Talbert Middle

School received the recognition.

“It’s quite an honor,” Board President Carol Kanode said.

The Distinguished Schools went through a rigorous selection process by

the California Department of Education with the help of the county

offices of education and local educators throughout the state. These

schools were judged to be exemplary at a state-level competition. Each

school has received a site visit to validate the information provided in

the application.
