Golden West College will host its 15th annual Scholarships and Awards

Convocation and Reception at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the amphitheater.

A reception and student art exhibit will immediately follow the

ceremony in the Fine Arts Courtyard and Art Gallery.

Since 1986, Golden West College had granted $1.43 million to deserving

students continuing their academic goals at universities or four-year

colleges, those returning to Golden West the next academic year and those

entering the institution as freshmen.

Lecturer to focus on following dreams

Gene Wall Cole will present a lecture called “Follow Your Dreams: The

Bottom Line” from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Huntington Beach Church

of Religious Science, 7641 Talbert Ave. Cole has learned from, traveled

with and played for the likes of the Dalai Lama, Stevie Wonder, Robin

Williams and the Saudi Arabian Royal family. Cost is $20. Information:

The city of Huntington Beach is offering a one-session class covering

how to protect family pictures, the importance of photo journalizing and

a fun way to put it all together to create family heirloom albums. The

class will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday May 8 at the

Edison Community Center, 21377 Magnolia Ave., Huntington Beach and from

6:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 23 at Murdy Community Center, 7000 Norma Ave. Those

in attendance should bring 8-10 photos to work with as they complete the

first page. Photo safe album and materials are available for purchase if

desired.

Registration fee is $16 with an additional $5 materials fee payable to

Asthma screening set in Fountain Valley

The American College of Asthma and Immunology will sponsor two free

asthma screenings in Fountain Valley to recognize the problem in adults

and children as part of its nationwide asthma screening program.

The college has screened more than 30,000 people for asthma over the

last five years.

Screenings will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Orange Coast

Memorial Medical Center at 9920 Talbert Ave.On May 12, screenings will

also be held in the Saltzer Conference Room of the Fountain Valley

Regional Hospital at 17100 Euclid St.

Wildlife center celebrates third anniversary

On Sunday, the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach

celebrated its third anniversary.

During the three years of operation, the Wetlands and Wildlife Care

Center has received nearly 6,000 animals for treatment. In addition to

treating and caring for 2,847 animals last year, the center rehabilitated

and released back in to the wild a majority of the endangered pelicans

received. The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center is a nonprofit

organization established by the Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy and

the Alliance for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education. The Center also

strives to educate its volunteers and the public in responsible

stewardship in its work as a wildlife rehabilitation facility.

Tutors sought for literacy program

The Oak View Family Literacy Program in Huntington Beach is looking

for volunteers interested in becoming literacy tutors. The four-session

tutor training workshop will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday,

Wednesday and May 14 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 12 at the Oak View

Branch Library, 17241 Oak Lane, Huntington Beach. During training,

volunteers will learn techniques and activities for helping adults learn

to read, write and speak English, as well as learn how to read to their

Day of the Teacher set for Wednesday

Wednesday has been set aside as the Day of the Teacher to acknowledge

the dedication and ongoing efforts of California’s teachers. This year’s

theme, “Teachers Send Rays of Light -- Catch Yours!” emphasizes the

energy teachers put into reaching every child academically and

emotionally.

The Assn. of Mexican-American Educators will sponsor the event. During

the 1970s, the association adopted the Mexican tradition of annually

recognizing teachers and began organizing appropriate events throughout

the state. In 1985, group sponsored legislation, later incorporated in

the Education Code, established the Day of the Teacher to be observed

each year on the second Wednesday in May.

Golden West celebrates Cinco de Mayo

Golden West College honored Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday. The holiday

included a celebration of Mexican culture, food and music by Mariachi

singer Sandy Garcia and KCMG-FM. Food was provided by Super Antojitos in

Huntington Beach.
