Padres edge Dodgers, now 9-0

The Dodgers nearly knocked off the Padres from their unbeaten perch in

Fountain Valley Youth Baseball Pony Minor Division weekend action, but

the Padres kept their record intact by rallying for a 5-4 victory

Saturday.

The Dodgers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning before

the Padres rallied to tie the score at 2, then took the lead for good at

5-2 on runs batted in from Tim Golden, Erick Koon and Chad Blauer. The

Dodgers rallied for two more runs in the seventh inning behind the

hitting of Brandon Cooke and Rusty Nelson, but came up a run short.

Golden and Justin Ballew each finished with two hits to lead the

Padres, who improved to 9-0 and own a three-game lead over the Dodgers in

the division standings. Matt Salhus had two hits to lead the Dodgers.

Dodger pitcher Valle Fluss held the Padres scoreless for the first 4

2/3 innings. Padres starter Rory Jones limited the Dodgers to a single

hit and an unearned run in three innings, while striking out five. Blauer

allowed one earned run with seven strikeouts in four innings.

The Padres also had beaten the Astros, 12-10, in earlier action.

Mitchell Roemer hit a two-run home run. Jones, Blauer and Jarrett Carr

tripled, and Koon had two hits and an RBI for the Padres. Thomas Stadfelt

doubled and singled for the Astros.

In other games:

Marlins 12, Dodgers 7

Marc Chapman hit a two-RBI single, and Daniel Rodgers threw four

scoreless innings to lead the Marlins.

BRONCO MAJOR DIVISION

Angels 13, Dodgers 5

Down 7-5 heading into their final at-bat, the second-place Angels

erupted for eight runs to win going away. Les Obie, Jon Muto, Alex

Artinger, Trent Burns-Stickney and Jared Vaughan all had singles in the

inning, and Jared Musacchio laid down a perfect bunt, which scored two

runs. Jon Birt capped the inning with a triple.

MUSTANG DIVISION

Angels 6, Diamondbacks 5

Eddie Pinela delivered a two-RBI double in the final inning as the

Angels wiped out a 5-4 deficit to post their sixth victory in seven

games. On the season, Pinela now has five doubles, two triples and two

home runs. Abdon Ortega pitched three solid innings for the Angels,

striking out eight.
