IRVINE - Corona del Mar High senior Jaycee Mahler dominated the

field in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles at Thursday’s Pacific Coast

League girls track and field finals at Irvine High.

No telling what she’ll do when she doesn’t train to the point of

exhaustion.

“(Mahler) was a little tired tonight,” said CdM Coach Bill Sumner,

explaining why her winning times of 17.09 and 47.12 were not her best

this spring. “But she’s been training like an animal the last two weeks.”

The Sea Kings showed equal command, winning the meet with 166 points,

21 ahead of second-place University. Costa Mesa was third (63) and

Estancia fifth (55).

The CdM victory, combined with the Sea Kings’ perfect PCL dual-meet

record, gives them their second straight PCL crown.

Now, CdM will try to defend its CIF Southern Section Division III

title, beginning with preliminaries next week.

“I think we have a shot,” said Sumner, who watched Sea Kings Jenny

Cummins, Julie Allen and Krisserin Canary win individual crowns. The

quartet of Becky Cummins, Katherine Morse, Mahler and Jenny Cummins also

topped the field in the 1,600 relay (4:04.79).

Jenny Cummins, a senior, won the 800 in 2:17.38, while Canary defended

her PCL title by matching her personal-best pole vault of 10-0.

Junior Julie Allen ran away with the 1,600 (5:04.11) and the 3,200 (11:14.33), events she won last year at the Sunset League Finals,

representing Fountain Valley High..

Costa Mesa junior Sharon Day defended her PCL high jump title by

clearing 5-6 and added a crown in the 400 with a time of 59.98.

Estancia junior Hanni Geider (26.71 in the 200) rounded out the

Newport-Mesa champions. She also finished second in the 100 (13.0).

Additional runner-up finishes were turned in by Allen (2:17.72 in the

800), Morse (a personal-best 1:01.96 in the 400), CdM’s Jaclyn Thayer

(15-5 in the long jump), Mesa’s Beverly Aina (33-4 1/4 in the shot put),

Estancia’s Jasmine Geider (26.97 in the 200) and CdM’s Diana Hossfeld

(5:08.24 in the 1,600).

The Geider sisters, along with Sarah Marx and Liz Huipe, finished

second in the 1,600 relay, while CdM’s 400 relay (Thayer, Canary, Kinzie

Kramer and Jenny Cummins) also finished second to qualify automatically

for the CIF prelims.

Several locals met third-place CIF prelim qualifying standards. They

include CdM’s Alison Brawner (5-4 in the high jump), Kramer (27.54 in the

200), Canary (31-11 in the triple jump), Huipe (11:31.31 in the 3,200), Hossfeld (2:21.76 in the 800) and Jasmine Geider (13:03 in the 100).

Aina finished third in the discus (94-5), but did not meet the

standard.

Other locals could earn at-large berths into the Division III prelims,

based on times from athletes in other leagues.
