Free community festival set for Fairview Park

Leadership Tomorrow will hold a free community festival from 10 a.m.

to 2 p.m. May 19 at Fairview Park.

Celebrate Community will feature entertainment for the whole family,

including tile painting, a new skateboard ramp, train rides, music,

refreshments and the opportunity to learn more about the community.

Leadership Tomorrow, a nonprofit organization, aims to expand the

knowledge of people who are committed to addressing the issues and

challenges that affect their community. The park is at 2525 Placentia

Ave., Costa Mesa.

Bark Park Foundation to hold rummage sale

The Costa Mesa Bark Park Foundation will host a “no fleas” market and

rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the dog park at TeWinkle

Park, near Arlington and Junipero drives. Donated items are tax

deductible, and proceeds will go to the foundation’s operating fund.

Strawberries will be bountiful at event

The second annual Strawberry Sunday and Classic Car Show will be held

at the Orange County Market Place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The event

will salute national strawberry month with a car show featuring red and

white cars with red interiors. Also expected are strawberry pie-eating

contests, strawberry shortcake booths, strawberries grown at Tanaka Farms

and more food.

Fashion show to benefit Costa Mesa charity

A fashion show and luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today

at the Four Seasons Hotel’s Palm Garden to benefit Costa Mesa-based

Serving People in Need.

Founded in 1987, the nonprofit organization dedicates itself to

helping people achieve self-sufficiency through housing assistance, job

training, educational support, substance abuse recovery and crisis

intervention.

Last year, the group helped 70 people through its guaranteed apartment

payment program and, so far this year, has helped 113. Last year, the

group placed 459 people into its substance abuse rehabilitation program.

Four Seasons Hotel is near Fashion Island in Newport Beach.

Tickets for the event are $85. Reservations are requested.

Show to help gardeners improve skills

The 12th annual Southern California Spring Garden Show will begin at

11 a.m. today at South Coast Plaza. It will feature numerous speakers,

including national gardening experts and celebrated authors. There also

will be 22 informative seminars and workshops for garden enthusiasts to

sharpen their horticulture skills.

The garden show will also be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and

11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Santa Ana Army reunion set for Saturday

The Costa Mesa Historical Society will sponsor the 26th annual reunion

of the Santa Ana Army Air Base Wing beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at

Orange Coast College.

Though last year was supposed to be the last reunion, the group was

lucky enough to be able to gather again, said Bud Anderson, the reunion

chairman.

The Santa Ana Army Base Wing was the largest of three aviation cadet

classification and preflight centers in the United States during World

War II.

About 150 veterans are expected to attend the event, which requires a

$10 registration fee to pay for festivities. The luncheon part of the

program is sold out, Anderson said.
