Antique collectors will love the Newport Beach Spring Antiques Show

2001 happening tomorrow through Sunday at the Lido Isle Clubhouse on Lido

Island. The Lido Isle Women’s Charitable Foundation has put together this

annual antique show with support from South Coast Plaza. It will benefit

Childhelp USA, Harvesters and the Decorative Arts Society. The show hours

will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.

to 5 p.m. Sunday. The daily show’s admission is $12. Antique and interior

design expert Gep Durenburger will be the guest lecturer at 3 p.m.

Saturday. His lecture is titled “Incorporating Antiques into the Southern

California Lifestyle.” Admission is $25. The ticket does not include show

admission.

Glabman Furniture is having a first-time ever demonstration on the

ancient practice of rug-making Friday, shown by master weavers from

India. Giant looms will be used to show the way rugs have been made for

centuries. The public is invited to watch the event, which is sponsored

by the Untied Nations Development Program. There also will be an

internationally renowned rug expert, Nasser Rahmanan, who will have a

presentation on what to look for in a handcrafted rug and how to avoid

being taken advantage of when buying a rug. Topics in his presentation

will include the following: is the rug machine or hand made; how to

determine the materials used; how to inspect the knot count; counting

colors; and why not to be concerned with weight. The seminar will be held

in conjunction with the demonstration at noon and 3 p.m. “We are

delighted to welcome these artisans from India who will mark their debut

in the United States here at our showroom,” said Kathy Jarvis of Glabman

Furniture in a press release. “This is a rare opportunity to witness the

amazing artistry of these craftsmen as they demonstrate the skills that

were passed down to them by their ancestors for centuries. Just as the

painstaking process of rug-making has remained unchanged, so too has the

South Coast Art Gallery is showing new works on the female form by

Laguna Beach photographer Mark Walpin and Los Angles sculptor Tanya Ragir

through May 26. Walpin’s photos have been hand treated with oil glazes

that make an abstract look. The sculptures are done in ceramic, as well

as bronzes cast from clay. Ragir’s works vary from the look of classic

Greeks to contemporary abstract forms. The gallery is a few doors down
