The Huntington Beach Police Department will present a Police

Appreciation Day and Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the

Central Police Department Station next to City Hall, 2000 Main St.

Activities will include tours of the jail and communications and crime

lab. In addition there will be displays of the helicopter, K-9, traffic

and DARE units, as well as from the SWAT team and beach detail. Free.

Geologist workshop set for SaturdayChildren ages 7 to 12 are

invited to take a one-session “Young Geologist” workshop from 9 a.m. to

12:30 p.m. Saturday at Edison Community Center, 21377 Magnolia St.,

Huntington Beach.

Class participants will learn about the development of the earth’s

crust and how minerals, crystals, rocks and solids form.

Children should bring a snack and arrive promptly since samples will

be shown at the beginning of class.

Registration fee to take the one-session class is $23 with an

additional $10 materials fee payable to the instructor at the beginning

Authors to share lives at luncheon

Authors Maralys Wills and Frances Khiralla Novle will be the featured

guests at a luncheon presented by the Friends of the Library called “True

Life Stories” at 11:30 a.m. May 18 at the Huntington Beach Library, 7111

Talbert Ave.

Highlighting the latest of her nine books, “Save My Son: A Mother and

a Sheriff Unite to Reclaim the Lives of Addicted Offenders,” Wills will

relate her personal experience in dealing with an addicted son and the

solutions offered for addiction.

Noble will share tales told to her by her Syrian grandparents and

aunts as chronicled in her book “The Situe Stories.” The book features 11

stories following the lives of a Christian Arabic family.

The cost is $15 for the program and lunch, and checks can be made to

Women’s Club to hold travel forum

The Huntington Beach Christian Women’s Club will present a the

luncheon, “Pack to Travel,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 23 at the Los

Caballeros Sports Village Ballroom, 17272 Newhope St., Fountain Valley.

Special guests will include Dorothy Van Wyk with tips on packing

suitcases, world class songstress Kathy Dane and Marilyn Tyner, an

identical twin who will share how she overcame her identity crisis.

The cost is $14 and reservations must be made on or before Tuesday.

Fire Department to train on use of extinguishers

The Huntington Beach Fire Department Energy Services Office will

present a class on using fire extinguishers from 7:45 a.m. to noon June 2

at the Huntington Beach Fire Department Central Net Training Center,

18301 Gothard St.

Participants will learn how to effectively use a fire extinguisher,

shut off natural gas, electricity and water, secure water heaters and

migrate hazards in the home.

Training is free to participate but each attendee must bring a fire

extinguisher or purchase a five-pound extinguisher to use and recharge.
