Boys tennis: Sea Kings start with shutout

CORONA DEL MAR - The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team stormed

to an 18-0 victory over visiting Orange Lutheran in the first round of

the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs Tuesday.

The Sea Kings (19-0) nearly shut out Orange Lutheran in singles play

dropping just four games as junior Cameron Ball and sophomore Garrett

Snyder won their sets 6-0.

Top-seeded CdM will now play Webb at a site to be determined by coin

flip today, which defeated San Jacinto 17-1, in the second round Friday

at 3:15 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Thursday, but the Sea

Kings agreed to reschedule because four of Webb’s players have AP exams.

“It’s just a matter of getting it over with and getting on to the next

match,” CdM Coach Tim Mang said of his Sea Kings’ first-round match. “It

doesn’t help us very much and it doesn’t help them very much.”

Orange Lutheran did not have a third doubles team, automatically

forfeiting a 6-0 loss to CdM. The Sea Kings senior duo of Peter

Kulmaticki and Michael Bean did not surrender a point in their sets.

The CIF individuals playoffs are at Costa Mesa Tennis Center Saturday.

Ball will play in singles competition, which begins at 9 a.m. CdM tandems

Kulmaticki and Bean, along with senior Brian Morton and Snyder will

compete in doubles, which begins approximately at 10 a.m.
