The Huntington Beach City School District honored its spelling bee

winners: fourth-grader Jade Quail and fifth-grader Jacob Jaffe of

Peterson Elementary School, sixth-grader Michael Thompson and

eighth-grader Cassie Wallace from Dwyer Elementary School, and

seventh-grader Nancy Woo of Sowers Middle School. . . . Catherine

Follett, assistant superintendent of instruction at the Fountain Valley

School District, will retire after 44 years in education. Follett has

served as the principal at Nieblas, Wardlow, Oka Elementary, Plavan

Elementary and Fulton Middle schools. She will be honored at a reception

June 13 from 2:30 to 3:30 in the district board room, 17210 Oak St.,

Fountain Valley. Former parents, past students, friends and colleagues

are welcome to come and wish Follett a happy retirement. . . . Kathy

Kessler, Huntington Beach City School District’s assistant superintendent

of personnel, was named personnel/human resources administrator of the

year for Orange County by the Assn. of California School Administrators.

In addition to being selected as the Region 17 Administrator of the Year,

she is also a candidate for the association’s state award to be presented

at the annual conference in San Francisco in November. . . . Elizabeth

Thomson of Huntington Beach was appointed to the Dean’s List at the

School of Arts and Architecture at UCLA for the fall 2000 quarter. She is

a 2000 graduate of Ocean View High School. She is the daughter of Matt

and Cathy Thomson of Huntington Beach. . . . Huntington Beach native

Nicole C. Alvino has been transferred to Londonwith the Houston-based

Enron Corp. She’s a financial analyst working in global finance and will

be on assignment there for 18-24 months. She is a 1994 graduate of Marina

High School and a 1998 magna cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University.

She is the daughter of Vincent and Sally Alvino of Huntington Beach.
