CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High junior Cameron Ball swept at

No. 2 singles without dropping a game Friday as the host Sea Kings

defeated Claremont-based Webb, 17-1, in the second round of the CIF

Southern Section Division V boys tennis playoffs.

The top-seeded Sea Kings, who improved to 20-0, will play at St.

Bonaventure of Ventura in the quarterfinals Tuesday, their first road

assignment in three postseason matches.

Corona del Mar, which has never finished a season undefeated in dual

matches, won all nine singles sets with No. 1 Brian Morton, headed for UC

Irvine next season, Ball and No. 3 Garrett Snyder, a sophomore. Morton

and Snyder lost only one game each.

In doubles, CdM senior standouts Peter Kulmaticki and Randy Myers

swept at No. 1 as the Sea Kings won eight of nine sets against the Gauls.

St. Bonaventure, the Tri-Valley League champion, defeated Nordhoff in

the first round and Cate, 12-6, in the second round Thursday. CdM played

its match against Webb a day later to accommodate a testing schedule for

Webb students.

The Sea Kings remain on a collision course to meet second-seeded

Brentwood in finals May 30 at the Claremont Club.

“They’re the second-best team in all of CIF,” CdM Coach Tim Mang said

of the Eagles, “and maybe the first.”

Corona del Mar, trying for its second CIF title in two years after

winning the Division I title in 1999, will probably face fourth-seeded

Harvard-Westlake in the semifinals. Harvard-Westlake defeated CdM last

year in the Division I semifinals.
