COSTA MESA RESOURCE OFFICERS

Two years ago, Newport Beach and the Newport-Mesa Unified School

District began a program that brought police onto middle and high school

campuses in Newport Beach. Now, city officials in Costa Mesa want to

emulate the school resource officer program.

What to expect: The school district staff and Costa Mesa Police

Department have ironed out terms of an agreement to be considered tonight

by the school board. It calls for two officers to spend at least 75% of

their time at the three secondary school campuses. The district would pay

50% of the pay, training and equipment for two officers, and 25% of the

cost of their patrol cars. If the school board passes the agreement, the

program would begin in the fall.

‘PURSUING VICTORY WITH HONOR’

One of the recommendations in the district’s strategic plan is the

addition of a CIF program for coaches and athletes called “Pursuing

Victory with Honor.” The program covers sportsmanship, character building

and the responsibilities of coaches and athletes regarding their behavior

and being positive role models.

What to expect: It is widely believed by district and school officials

that a program that provides a consistent model for coaches and students

is needed. Trustees will consider using this program.

22 TEXTBOOKS UP FOR APPROVAL

Each semester, teachers who want to add textbooks to those being used

in the classroom must submit nominees to their department chair,

principal and the district for approval before they may use them.

What to expect: There are 22 textbooks from all but one secondary

school in the district that teachers hope will receive board approval

tonight. Several weeks ago, when the books were made available to the

public, trustee Wendy Leece, who has in the past voted against several

science, English and health books, suggested that board members read over

the materials.
