Orange County’s biggest Pro/Am surfing event, the Huntington Beach

Pro/Am Surf Series, will hold its third event of the season Memorial Day

Weekend.

Competition will run Friday through Sunday at 9th Street, just north

of the Huntington Beach Pier.

“Get ready for a full weekend of exciting pro and amateur surfing,”

Event Director Seth Matson said. “Ninth Street is a great location for an

event such as this one. The swell has been up for a couple weeks straight

and the competitors are ready to go big.”

The Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series runs just four man heats, with

the top two advancing. The level of competition increases throughout the

day as the top competitors move forward into the finals.

Amateur surfers will compete Saturday in the following divisions:

Super Groms (11 and under); Boys (12-14); Juniors (15-17); Mens (18-28);

Masters (29 and up); Longboard (age open), and Women (age open).

Last month’s winners included Tommy Hennekan (Super Grom), Chad

Compton (Boys), Dave Pena (Juniors), Jonathon Atchley (Mens), Mark Austin

(Masters), Liz Kampen (Women), and Joey Hawkins (Longboard).

Pro/Am surfers will compete Sunday, where amateurs can surf against

the pros.

Laguna Beach’s Bron Huesenstamm edged out Jeff Deffenbaugh to win last

month’s Pro/Am Division competition.

Due to limited space, competitors are encouraged to preregister to

guarantee entry into the competition. Entry forms are available at most

surf shops, at o7 http//:www.hbsurfseries.comf7 , or by calling

596-5019.

Upcoming Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series event dates include June

9-10 and July 7-8.
