COSTA MESA -- The tables were turned Friday at Victoria Elementary

School as Principal Judy Laakso found herself center stage and teary-eyed

at a special celebration in her honor.

Every teacher and student had a hand in the surprise event, which

honored Laakso as “Principal of the Year” after she was named a Principal

of Excellence by the Irvine Co. two weeks ago.

Entire grade levels sang songs, recited poems, read Top 10 lists and

even presented an ode they had written for their beloved leader.

“I’m absolutely speechless,” a choked-up Laakso said when she finally

took the podium. “I’m overwhelmed and touched by the time and effort put

into this.”

Laakso was inundated with colorful tissue-paper flowers, a tiara,

personalized mouse ears and various gifts, and several songs were written

for and about her.

The first-grade class sang “I’m a Little Principal” to the tune of

“I’m a Little Teapot” and kindergarten children changed the lyrics of

“B-I-N-G-O” to “L-A-A-K-S-O.” Even Mickey Mouse lost his theme song for

the day as third-graders rewrote the words.

“That everybody took the time and effort to make this such a special

day for me -- they really touched my heart,” Laakso said.

Students clearly had a hand in the sentiments expressed in the various

presentations. Interspersed with the touching sentiment of poems were

lines obviously written by students.

On hand to witness her special day were a dozen of Laakso’s family and

district staff members ranging from maintenance crew workers and their

director to Supt. Robert Barbot.

Leading the ceremonies was Scott Paulsen, a well-known community

member who is active in education and school fund-raising.

“She treats everyone fairly and is committed to seeing everyone

succeed,” he said of Laakso.
