Huntington Beach’s Tim Reyes took the top prize last weekend at the

Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series’ third event of the 2001 season. The

18-year-old overcame poor surf conditions and scored an 8 on his first

wave of the heat to edge out aerial king Dave Post, who finished in

second place. Reyes won $1,000 at the single-rated event.

“I have to pay my buddy back $700 that he loaned me on a recent surf

trip,” Reyes said, when asked where his winnings would go. “I had a lot

of fun in this event even though the waves weren’t that great. But, the

competition was really tough.” Waves reached just one to two feet, with

occasional three-foot sets, for Sunday’s Pro/Am competition, held at 9th

St. in Huntington Beach. Another Huntington Beach local, 17-year-old

Brandon Guilmette, won the XS City Airshow’s $500 prize.

Guilmette scored a 6 in the final to squeeze past Reyes, who was

poised to post his second win Sunday.

Other first place winners included: Jesse Steelman (Super Grom);

Killian Garland (Boys); Sean Taylor (Juniors); Brandon Long (Mens); Jason

Haughey (Masters); Heather Pine (Womens), and Anthony Banuelos

(Longboard).

The next Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series event will be held June

9-10 at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. The double-rated

event will feature a $2,000 first-place prize. Competitors are encouraged

to sign up early to guarantee a spot in the competition.
