The Orange County Board of Supervisors has received $1.9 million in

state grant money to help pay for three urban-runoff projects in the

Santa Ana River watershed.

Board members accepted the grants at their Tuesday meeting and

allocated the money to the projects.

The revenue was earmarked for the county’s summer diversion of runoff,

non-storm diversions and bacterial research.

The funding was included in the state’s 2000-01 budget.

Of the $1.9 million, $788,000 will go toward dry-season diversions,

$929,200 to non-storm diversions and $250,000 to research.

Automobile oils, animal waste and other runoff from city streets flows

into the Santa Ana River and then into the waters of Newport Beach and

Huntington Beach.

To reduce beach postings and closures, the county implemented a

program to divert the waste water to a sewage treatment plant.
