THE STUFF -- MIKE SCIACCA

The new HBI sports column begins with much fanfare, as hearty

congratulations goes out to the Edison High Chargers for winning the

school’s first baseball championship Saturday. . . .

Winning pitcher David Huff, formerly of Seaview Little League, was a

member of the Independent’s 1997 Little League Majors Division Dream

Team. . . .

Fellow Charger A.J. Martinez continued his record-setting activity

year: He finished the baseball season with a school record of 29 stolen

bases. Last fall on the football field, the junior defensive back set a

school single-season mark with eight interceptions. . . .

Edison won the title in Coach Dave Tallman’s first season despite

returning just three starters from last year’s 14-11-1 team. . . .

The great thing about this championship is the players didn’t win this

thing alone. Last week, presale ticket sales were brisk on the Edison

campus for the Dodger Stadium event, and the student body, as well as the

rest of the Charger supporters, were awesome. They rivaled any other

teams’ support group at the stadium. Congrats, too, to Edison’s “10th”

Man. . . .

Two area players, Edison’s Joey Mozeleski and Ocean View’s Tyler

Kreil, suited up this week for the South squad this week in the Orange

County All-Star high school baseball game at Cal State Fullerton. . . .

The Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series will hold its fourth event of

the 2001 season this weekend at the south side of the Huntington Beach

Pier. The two-star rated event features amateur competition Saturday, and

the Pro/Am Division competition Sunday. A $2,000 prize awaits Sunday’s

first place Pro/Am finisher. . . .

Hard to believe that the 2001 Little League season is winding down. If

it’s June, however, then it’s time for the District 62 Little League

Tournament of Champions. This year’s tournament is being hosted by

Huntington Valley Little League, and it commences June 18. . . .

A Perfect Season?: Two more victories -- wins in their final two games

this week -- are all that separates the Robinwood Little League Minor B

Division Mets from a perfect season. They entered the week with a 17-0

record -- the only perfect mark in all of Robinwood Little League this

season. . . .

Standout pitching by Justin Scovel and Christopher Schaff and the

torrid hitting of Mackey Clustka, Trevor O’Dell and Mitch Huffman, have

powered the Mets, who already have captured the Minor B championship and

are headed to compete in next weekend’s District 62 Tournament of

Champions. . . .

From the Better Late Than Never Department: Congratulations go out to

the Ocean View Little League Minor B Red Sox, who recently won its first

game of the season by upending the second place Royals, 13-2. Sox

pitchers Alex Baker and Calvin Primich gave up just three hits and one

earned run, and Sean Kuehner and Ian Reilly provided strong defensive

play. The offense was sparked by Mitchell Grant, who went 4 for 4, Greg

Greiner, who had three hits and two RBI and Baker and Kuehner, who each

finished with two hits.
