The Newport Beach Fire and Marine Department will conduct tryouts for

its introductory lifeguard cadet training program Sunday.

The program, designed for 15- and 16-year-olds, introduces

participants to CPR, first aid and ocean rescue skills.

The tryouts include a 1,000-meter swim and a 1,000-meter swim and run.

The scores of both the events will be combined, and the top 20 finishers

will be selected. Those selected will be paid minimum wage.

The program includes 108 hours of training over a six-week period

during the summer. The typical schedule for the cadet program will be

Monday through Wednesday for five hours each day, and an additional three

hours on Thursdays assisting in the Junior Lifeguard program.

According to officials, many of the candidates each year have

completed the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard program.

Sunday’s tryouts will begin at 9 a.m. at the Newport Pier. Officials

welcome the public to watch the competition. Information: Capt. John

Blauer, (949) 644-3111.
