OFFICERS INSTALLED: The Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions held its

2001-2002 officer installation and awards night on Tuesday, and Costa

Mesa insurance agent Mike Scheafer, a past district governor and past

president of the club, was installed as president for the coming year.

The officers were installed by Bob King, past district governor of

District 4-L2. Serving with Scheafer are Phill Mutt, vice president; Lee

Gibbs, secretary/treasurer; Mike McIlroy, tailtwister; Daniel Barnes,

lion tamer; Raul Jara, bulletin editor; Bill Johnston, Art Perry, Jim

Wahner, Rod Cunha, directors and Brett Smith, immediate past president.

Awards were presented by outgoing President Brett Smith to Mike

Scheafer, Lion of the Year 2000-2001, and Scheafer and Art Parry who

received the LEO Club Advisory award for their work with the LEO club at

Estancia High School.

According to Scheafer, the new officers will be working on the club’s

75th anniversary celebration and on reinstating the Fish Fry. Other goals

include membership development and continued support of the LEO Club at

Estancia High School.

YOUTH OF THE YEAR: The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor honored Costa

Mesa High students Sean Engard, who will attend Orange Coast College this

fall, and then enroll at UC Irvine to study medicine and Monisha Lilaram,

who also is headed for OCC this fall, followed by a transfer to UCLA or

UC San Diego. The students were accompanied by their parents and Costa

Mesa High School counselor Jennifer Penjoyan.

DOING GOOD DEEDS: The Costa Mesa-Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club

continues, in a quiet way, doing good deeds around the community. Take,

for example, a donation of school supplies arranged by member Marvin

Kravitz valued at $3,000 by the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

Then there is the $25 donation to Girl Scout Troop #762, $100 to the

Blind Children’s Learning Center and $300 to the City of Hope.

The club recently held a spaghetti dinner and bingo night that raised

$1,650, thanks to the organizing efforts of Kravitz. Club Vice President

Jim Ballinger reported the project was one of the best-run Lions Club

projects that he had participated in during his 40-plus years as a Lions

Club member. It had good member participation, good food, good

camaraderie and was well run.

WELCOMING PARTY: You can join the celebration to welcome Mr.

Irrelevant XXVI at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Newport Dunes Resort. Tevita

Ofahengaue, the 246th and final pick in the NFL draft and a 6-3,

255-pound pound tight end from BYU, is the honoree. The Commodores Club

of the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce has organized the event,

which features a no-host bar, food from some of the areas finest

restaurants, dozens of gifts for the honoree and entertainment. It will

be a fun-filled evening as Ofahengaue gets introduced to the Newport-Mesa

HONORED: Following a tour of the Los Angeles Times offices on

Sunflower, guided by Daily Pilot Publisher Tom Johnson, members of the

Newport-Balboa Rotary Club and Johnson returned to the Bahia Corinthian

Yacht Club for dinner. After dinner, Johnson provided the history of the

Pilot and discussed why it has been so well-received in the Newport-Mesa

community. Club President Wendell Sawyer surprised Johnson with a

proclamation from the Club, expressing appreciation for the Daily Pilot’s

support of the Reading by 9 program at Pomona, Whittier and Wilson

elementary schools.

“We wouldn’t have been able to provide 9,000 Reading by 9 books to the

three schools if the Daily Pilot hadn’t come forward to be our partner in

the efforts,” Sawyer said.
