Softball: Fireballs take league title

The Fireballs, a girls 15-and-under team from the Pacific Coast

Bobby Sox overcame an early playoff loss to win the League Championship

Series.

After the first-round loss, the Fireballs rebounded with a 4-0 win

over Pico Rivera. Julianne Bass led the offense with three hits and two

RBI, while Ashley Gleason added two hits and an RBI. Gleason also pitched

a complete-game, two-hitter with 14 strikeouts.

The rest of the Fireballs’ offense was supplied by Heather Lohrman,

Hillary Ockey, Ali Harley-Gart and Nicole Navarre, who each produced key

hits.

The Fireballs faced Pico again in the semifinals and pulled out a 4-3

win. Gleason pitched another gem with 12 strikeouts and added three hits

at the plate, while Lohrman and Navarre each had two hits.

Sasha Grumman also produced a key hit, but the deciding blow came from

Ellen Rose, who smacked a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.

The championship game was against Mission Del Norte. The Fireballs

trailed, 6-5, but rallied to win the title, 8-6. Lohrman had a single,

double and triple, while Gleason and Harley-Gart each added two hits and

an RBI.

Ali Macheski had two singles and two RBIs, while Ashley Chandler and

Vanessa Sampablo-Romo each added key defensive plays.
