“SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER”

It was a time when milk cost 33 cents a quart, bread was 24 cents a

loaf and eggs were 61 cents a dozen. America was watching “All in the

Family,” reading “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” and listening to the tunes

of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.”

Of course, America was also listening to the Bee Gees wailing “Ah, ah,

ah, ah, staying alive, staying alive.” And watching a young man dressed

snappily in white swing his hips in time to the beat.

“Saturday Night Fever” the musical may not have John Travolta in the

lead, but it does bring back memories of the days when disco was king.

The touring production, starring Richard Blake as Tony Manero, opens

Tuesday at the Center.

There are some differences between the movie and the musical. The

violence, sex and language of the film has been toned down to make the

musical more family friendly, and the Bee Gees wrote two new songs for

the production -- “Immortality” and “First & Last.”

But if you’re missing the bell-bottomed, medallion wearing ‘70s vibe,

this is your chance to catch a cleaned-up version of it.
