Junior tennis: Locals advance at SoCal Junior Sectionals

FOUNTAIN VALLEY - Three local tennis standouts, Matthew Chou, Nelly

Radeva and Jamison Steele, advanced to the Round of 16 in the 99th

Southern California Junior Tennis Sectional Championships Monday at Los

Caballeros Sports Village.

In the boys 14s, Newport Coast’s Chou rallied to defeat Gordon Shu of

Torrance, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the Round of 32, while Charlie Alvarado

(Costa Mesa), Ian Connolly (Newport Beach), Parker Rhodes (Corona del

Mar), Robert Khoury (Newport Beach), Charlie Farmer (Newport Beach) and

Nicholas Gingold (CdM) were eliminated from boys singles championship

brackets.

In the girls 14s, Steele (Newport Beach) defeated El Cajon’s Charlee

Warford, 6-1, 6-2, to qualify for the Round of 16, while Radeva (Costa

Mesa) also advanced in the girls 10s with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Palm

Springs’ Tasha Gilbreath.

In the girls 12s, Jillian Braverman and Sarah Geocaris, both of

Newport Beach, advanced to the Round of 32.

Alexandria Walters (CdM), Karina Van Leuven (Newport Beach), Hayley

Young (Newport Beach) and Jill Damion (Newport Beach) were all eliminated

Monday from girls singles championship brackets.

In Sunday’s boys 18s action, Cameron Ball (CdM) came back nicely to

defeat Timothy Stenovec of San Luis Obispo, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to

the Round of 32, then swept Gregory Sher of Playa Del Rey, 6-1, 6-1, to

move on to the Round of 16 today.

In the girls 18s, Kimberly Singer of Newport Beach defeated Megan

Biorkman of Irvine, 6-4, 6-0, to also advance to the Round of 16.
