The sun’s hot. The sand’s hot. The surf’s hot.

It’s summer in Newport-Mesa, and as good as fall, winter and spring

are, now is by far the best time of year. Night falls late, so even after

work you can watch the sun set. The supermarkets fill with fruits of

every color. Kids have time to run and play. The weekends offer us

everything and anything to do.

But every up has its downside, and in West Newport Beach, summer also

means the repeated presence of vacationers looking to squeeze a year’s

worth of beach living out of a glorious week or two.

So they barbecue. They spend hours on the beach. They point the

stereo speakers outside so they can sit on the deck and watch the day go

by. They turn the music up. They have a few drinks. They turn the music

up a little more. And they keep going as late as they can, all while

sleeping as little as possible. After all, their home looks the same as

their beachfront rental when they’re asleep.

You can’t blame them for wanting to enjoy what those lucky enough to

live a block or two from the beach wake to each morning. The trouble

comes when they want to enjoy it just a little too much. And that happens

just a little too often.

So, for any visitors who happen to pick up the Daily Pilot during

their time here: Welcome. Enjoy yourselves. But remember, your vacation

paradise is also your neighbor’s home.

And for our year-round residents and readers, remember, too, why you

moved here and why those rowdy tourists picked Newport Beach for their

vacation spot. Cut them a little slack when you can.

And when you can’t, tell the police to go easy on them.
